Climate change poses a serious threat to public health, with global warming being a major contributing factor. Previous research has established a connection between heat exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, there is a lack of focus on the long-term effects that heat exposure during pregnancy may have on the health and socioeconomic status of the offspring.

A systematic review was conducted to analyze the existing research on the effects of heat exposure during pregnancy. The review revealed that individuals who were exposed to excessive heat in utero experienced lifelong consequences. The studies covered a span of more than 100 years and showed associations between heat exposure during pregnancy and various negative outcomes. These outcomes included lower educational achievements, decreased income levels, increased risks of heart disease, hypertension, childhood asthma, pneumonia, malnutrition, obesity, mental illnesses, and reduced life expectancy.

Research findings indicated that individuals exposed to heat during pregnancy had lower educational performances and income levels in later life. For example, in the US, annual income at the age of 30 was reduced for each additional day with temperatures above 32°C during the first trimester of the mother’s pregnancy. These results highlight the economic burden that heat exposure during pregnancy can have on individuals.

Health Effects

Heat exposure during pregnancy was also linked to various health issues, including heart disease, hypertension, childhood asthma, pneumonia, malnutrition, obesity, and mental illnesses. The risks of childhood pneumonia were found to increase with every degree Celsius rise in temperature during pregnancy. Additionally, studies showed a higher risk of mental illnesses such as eating disorders and schizophrenia among individuals exposed to heat in utero.

The effects of heat exposure during pregnancy appeared to have a cumulative impact on an individual’s health and well-being, ultimately leading to lower life expectancy. Research also indicated that female foetuses may be more vulnerable to these effects, indicating potential sub-group vulnerabilities. Understanding the pathways through which heat exposure affects the unborn baby’s development is crucial in addressing these long-lasting consequences.
