In a world dominated by digital technology, the importance of printing technology may seem to have diminished. However, a recent breakthrough by a team led by Dr. Ken-ichi Yuyama from Osaka Metropolitan University has proven otherwise. Their development of a new printing technique, known as OV-LIFT, could pave the way for printable magnetic devices for high-density data storage.
The team utilized a laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) process using an optical vortex to print magnetic ferrite nanoparticles with incredible precision. By shining a laser beam through a spatial light modulator and a quarter-wave plate, the beam was converted into a circularly polarized optical vortex. This enabled the nanoparticles to be printed on a surface with accuracy, resulting in helix-like twisted structures that could be controlled by changing the helicity of the optical vortex.
Dr. Yuyama emphasized that the implications of this research go beyond just fine particle patterning. The ability to synthesize single crystals through this printing technique opens up possibilities for the development of new materials.
