The Future of Fragrance: Using Machine Learning to Replicate Odors

In a groundbreaking development, a team of chemical engineers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, along with a colleague from IA Murins Startups, has successfully utilized machine learning to replicate odors and verify them through experimental assessment of perfume perception.

The Limitations of Current Applications

While previous research has demonstrated the potential of using artificial intelligence to generate molecules with specific fragrances, the existing applications fall short in creating truly useful scents. This is mainly due to the fact that molecules in perfumes interact with the environment before reaching the nose, leading to significant changes in their composition over time.

Perfumes consist of various layers of scents known as “top notes,” “middle notes,” and “bass notes,” each contributing to the overall fragrance experience. The researchers recognized the time-sensitive nature of these components and aimed to develop an AI application that could account for these factors.

The Methodology

To achieve their goal, the team began by training a basic AI model on a database of known molecules with distinct fragrance notes. By creating a selection of molecules that matched specific characteristics, they identified a subset capable of evaporation patterns similar to the original fragrances. Subsequently, a second AI model was employed to minimize any discrepancies and ensure the accuracy of the replicated odor recipes.

Upon verification, the researchers discovered that the generated molecules closely resembled the desired fragrances, paving the way for further advancements in the field. Their ultimate objective is to leverage AI to produce any odor on demand, revolutionizing the way computers and other devices can simulate scents akin to current image generation capabilities.

With this innovative approach, the possibilities for personalized and tailored fragrance experiences are endless, offering a glimpse into the future of olfactory technology. By harnessing the power of machine learning, the realm of perfumery is poised for a paradigm shift, ushering in a new era of scent creation and customization.
