Identifying Pollutants in Freshwater with New Water Quality Analysis

A groundbreaking study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge and Trent University in Canada has introduced a comprehensive water quality analysis that can pinpoint the source of pollutants in rivers and freshwater lakes. This innovative approach utilizes high-resolution mass spectrometry to detect microparticles from car tires, pesticides from farmers’ fields, toxins from harmful algal blooms, and other organic chemicals present in the water. By analyzing water samples, researchers can not only identify the specific pollutants but also assess their impact on the aquatic ecosystem.

Water quality is heavily influenced by the diversity of organic matter dissolved in it, known as “chemodiversity.” Researchers emphasize that the presence of various dissolved organic compounds can either maintain the health of freshwater ecosystems or contribute to their deterioration, depending on the composition of the mixture. The traditional methods of monitoring water quality involve time-consuming measurements using multiple devices, whereas the newly developed technique offers a quick and comprehensive overview of the aquatic environment.

Through the analysis of individual molecules in water samples collected from rivers and lakes in Europe and northern Canada, the research team was able to identify sources of pollution such as phosphorus contamination in Lake Erie. By examining the unique molecular fingerprint of different pollutants, researchers determined that agricultural activities were the primary cause of the pollution, rather than wastewater effluent. This breakthrough allows for a more precise identification of pollution sources in freshwater bodies.

Dissolved organic matter in freshwater is one of the most complex mixtures on Earth, consisting of thousands of individual molecules with distinct properties. These organic compounds play a crucial role in various processes within rivers and lakes, including nutrient cycling, carbon storage, light absorption, and food web interactions, ultimately influencing ecosystem function. Sources of dissolved organic matter include urban runoff, agricultural runoff, aerosols, and wildfires, all of which contribute to the overall health of freshwater systems.

The researchers are now implementing their innovative approach to analyze water samples from farmland drainage ditches in the Fens as part of a project led by the University of Cambridge’s Center for Landscape Regeneration. This initiative aims to gain a deeper understanding of freshwater health in agricultural landscapes and further expand the application of the new water quality analysis technique. By identifying pollutants and their sources, scientists can take targeted measures to mitigate the impact of human activities on freshwater ecosystems.
