Five of the most renowned sculptors in history have teamed up with artificial intelligence (AI) to create a unique sculpture. Dubbed “the Impossible Statue,” the sculpture is currently on display at a museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Sandvik, a Swedish machine engineering group, used three AI software programs to design the artwork. The sculpture is made of stainless steel and depicts an androgynous figure holding a bronze globe while the lower half of the body is covered by a swath of material.

The Process

The idea behind the sculpture was to create a mix of styles from five famous sculptors who each made their mark on the art world. The artists include Michelangelo from Italy, Auguste Rodin from France, Kathe Kollwitz from Germany, Kotaro Takamura from Japan, and Augusta Savage from the US. Sandvik’s engineers trained the AI by feeding it numerous images of sculptures created by the five artists. The software then proposed several 2D images that it believed reflected key aspects from each of the artists. Afterward, the engineers put these 2D images into 3D modeling to bring the sculpture to life.

The Debate

The sculpture raises questions about the role of AI in the art world. While some argue that AI can never replace human creativity, others believe that it opens up new possibilities for artists. However, Julia Olderius, in charge of concept development at the museum, believes that it’s up to each individual to decide whether the sculpture can be considered art or not.

Olderius also believes that people do not need to be afraid of what AI is doing with creativity or concepts or art and design. Instead, she thinks that people should adapt to a new future where technology is a part of how we create concepts and art.

The Final Product

The final sculpture is a true masterpiece that would never have been created if it weren’t for AI. The use of AI allowed for the collaboration of five different sculptors who never met in real life. The statue measures 150 centimeters (4 feet 11 inches) and weighs 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). Observers will note the muscular body inspired by Michelangelo and the hand holding the globe inspired by Takamura.

The Impossible Statue is a unique example of how AI technology can be used to create works of art that challenge traditional conceptions about creativity and art. While some may question whether it can be considered art or technological prowess, the sculpture opens up new possibilities for artists and raises questions about the role of AI in the art world.
