Residents of a house in Hopewell, New Jersey, were surprised to find a grapefruit-sized metallic object had fallen through the roof and hit the floor of their home on Monday. The object left a hole in the roof and dented the floor. No one was in the house at the time of the incident.
Could It Be A Meteorite?
Police who responded to the incident and the local fire department’s hazmat team believe that the object could be a meteorite from the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, which peaked over the weekend. After checking that the object was not hazardous, an astrophysicist at the College of New Jersey was contacted to examine the object.
According to local reports, the object weighed about 4 pounds and could be as old as the Solar System, possibly 4 to 5 billion years old. The chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute, Derrick Pitts, said that it is rare for space rocks to hit buildings or people and that it has happened only a few times in history.
The family who owns the house was surprised by the incident and jokingly said that they had won the space lottery.
